Data Center Site Selection
Selecting a
site that is appropriate for constructing a data center
is very different than for other commercial spaces.
In fact, many
characteristics that may make a site a fantastic place
to work are just terrible if you’re planning to deploy a
data center in the building.
Working in a landmark
building in the city, or just a very old building with
lots of charm doesn’t translate well to the data center
designer.
There are quite a number of criteria
that you need to consider when selecting a site, and
NewVista Advisors has lots of experience helping clients
pick the best location – or knowing what’s wrong with a
location and how to fix it. Get our listing of key
site selection criteria using the link on the bottom
right of this page!
Here is the top level list of factors
you need to consider:
Natural Disasters - like
Earthquake, Flood, Hurricane,
Tornado, Severe Lightning storms - Severe Storms,
Excessive Snow, High Wind, Drought, Volcanoes, Tsunami,
or Mudslide.
I have to admit, I always
enjoy the Volcano on this list.
NEVER locate your data
center on a Volcano!
Environmental Issues
– Proximity to airports, highways, hazardous materials,
crime stats in the area, distance to police, fire,
hospital, etc.
Physical Location
– Multi-Tenant issues, Parking issues,
Utility issues
– cost of electricity, availability of telecom, power
and telecom diversity, etc.
Building Structure Issues
- Structural loading, risers, roof space, etc.
This top level
list is OK for a flavor of what you need to consider,
but certainly not sufficient.
NewVista Advisors has put
together a comprehensive list of key considerations in
data center site selection, which is available for you
to download via the link on the right.
Knowing what’s
on the list is helpful; however we still recommend that
you retain the services of an expert to help you through
this most critical part of the data center
implementation process.
Obviously, we hope that
expert you retain is NewVista Advisors.
